Visiting Hawaii 11/14

Postby Protist » June 9th, 2014, 12:52 pm

Not sure what island I'm going to be headed to yet. It is a surprise birthday trip for my dad, so we are still in the planning phase.

I just have a few questions, should I expect to hunt reef Fish or should I try some blue water diving for pelagic fish?

Should I bring my 110 Railgun, my 130 Railgun or both?

Rash guard or 2-3 mm top?

Thanks guys. I've never been to anywhere tropical, so I'm stoked to finally dive in some reasonably warm water this November.

What island are you going to? Around that time of the year I would go with a 3mm top. Rash guard if your just hunting tako (octopus).

It sounds like we are going to maui, either there or the big island. I don't want octopus hahaha I wanna shoot fish, reef or pelagic, it doesn't matter to me.

Bring the 110 and the 3mm suit or your 5mm top. The fish are smart and small in Hawaii but they sure are tasty. All these posts from Daryl and Sasha make it look easy but those guys are amazing divers. Check out fish ID's before you go. Any of the goat fish are tasty but there is one that supposedly makes you hallucinate. My favorite are the aweoweo and mempachi, Uhu are also delicious. November December is a good time for papio and it is also lobster season. Also blast all the Roi you can, invasive cigatuera laden grouper. However lobster are generally a night excursion in Hawaii. If you want to go blue water expect to drop some coin unless you can hook up with someone. Good luck and take lots of pictures.

^thats the regs on sizes. I'd also look up some videos on YouTube as well. Search "Travis Kashiwa" on there and see the quality fish he catches.
