Ab recipe suggestions

Postby NaClAddict » April 27th, 2016, 7:45 am

So the family and I are packing up to go to Sea Ranch next week. I was wondering if anyone has any great ab recipes. I've sautéed in butter with garlic, fried in batter, and all the standard recipes. If you have a recipe that really stands out please post it up.

Also, anyone have good tips on cleaning up the foot to preserve as much meat as possible? I feel like I always whittle away so much meat. Or is it just too tough and chewy to be eaten?

I've had ab cooked a bunch of different ways.
I like the bread crumb method, just not Progresso.
Sliced thin raw as sashimi or crudo. It's sweet and crunchy.
Ground up and made into a Chinese lettuce wrap.
Battered and fried kinda tempura.
John Choy makes a kick ass dish with rice, ginger, scallions and paper thin sliced ab.
Lemon, butter and caper sauce.
Ground up, mixed with? and fried in a wonton wrapper.

Knock your self out, just don't overcook it.

Lots of options with ground abalone -- burgers as has been mentioned, meat balls in tomato sauce w/ pasta or on pizza. I like to mix ground abalone with green onions and ginger and fold into a wonton wrapper and deep fry. Dip these in a sweet chili sauce for a great appetizer. Abalone also makes a mean chowder.

Good luck with the dive and leave a few meat helmets behind - I'll be up there in June.

Cheers,

Drown ab in freshwater or kill in freezer. Shuck and pound whole until it almost is ripping in half. Trim foot. Cut a cube grid down from the top, stopping before you get through the bottom. This should give you a bunch of finger sized chunks of meat and resemble how some people eat mangos, but it'll all be held together by the intact layer on the bottom. Rub pesto over the top and down through the fingers. Wrap in foil and put next to your campfire. Voila. Blooming pesto abalone.

Whoa Kirby. I just might go ab diving again just to do what you just said.

I've tried Kirby's recipe (though we cut the ab chunks off the foot to be honest) and it's as delicious and easy as it sounds.
What's the point of a hobby if it doesn't fill your stomach?

Pluck it out of the shell, clean it.
Put it back in the shell
Put a ton of garlic and butter under it.
Wrap in foil
Put on a BBQ .
Drink beer and bs with your buddies
About a hour later, cut some off and try, drink more beer
A real easy and tasty way to do ab,especially around a campfire.
