intro to spearfishing

Postby choelscher » September 16th, 2020, 8:12 am

Hey guys new to the forum and to the sport. I figured I would turn here for advice I am trying to get started spearfishing particularly pole spearing and shore diving. I have taken a free diving course and have searched around for spearfishing courses around as well. I realize there is probably useful information i could get from a spearfishing course/charter but I'm not looking to charter a boat every time i go spearfishing. So i have a multi part question.

A: Is there any courses that focus on pole spearing and shore diving.
B: If not what is some other advice for someone looking to get into the sport.

PS: i have attempted before in Florida to wing it based on info i have researched online on destination, it was a total failure. How would i go about looking for dive spots close enough to shore.

Thanks in advance

Where are you located, that would help to see the options.

Look up any of the spearfishing clubs. No better way to learn species, ethics, techniques and shorten the learning curve than hooking up with the experienced guys and getting mentored.

Also tons of good info here as well if you do a little reading.

Be safe, good luck!

Well I'm located in the Midwest USA I'm looking to move next year, but haven't quite decided where to yet. In the mean time travel is not a issue.

Finding a mentor would be great, where is the best place to find clubs?

well, not sure the whole travel thing would work with a club out here but you can probably find these online......San Diego Freedivers, North County depthfinders, OC Spearos, Long Beach Neptunes, LA Fathomiers, Santa Barbara Freedivers, NorCal Tritons....to start.
