A blast from the past

From stories about vintage gear to stories of days gone by, this is where we all came from.

A blast from the past

Postby Bill McIntyre » January 16th, 2015, 10:53 am

Back in 1998, the old Freedivelist held a party at the home of Robin Carden in San Juan Capistrano, CA. People came from all over the country, and I think even from other countries. Ata Bigili was working on his PhD at the U. of New Hampshire, and he and I used to alternate months as List Daddy/Moderator for a while.

He's back home in Turkey now, but he just tagged me in a photo of the party on Facebook. In case you can't recognize me, Nancy and I are the bottom panel.

Its discouraging how much I've changed. I actually thought I was old at age 59 then, but little did I know how much worse it would get. :)

Some of you may recall Chip Bissell from Spearboard. That's him in the panel above us.

I just realized that Ata has the entire album up. I'm trying to find people you may know. Here is Nate Baker in the lower panel and in the upper is Mark Barville, founder of the Freeedivelist.

Wow that's pretty amazing, Bill you guys look pretty much the same. The shot of Nate looks like its from the high school yearbook though :laughing-rollingred: .

Anyone hear of what chip is doing nowadays? Chip was a lawyer from up north, a very good seabass diver and I believe he also worked on the freedive recoery vest? For the new guys who don't know who we are talking about, Skip used to hold the world record white seabass. Rene is a commercial urchin diver and coaches a lot of the national champions, he shot the world record yellowtail and I don't know if Brandon ever submitted the other one so he may still have the record. Don Paul of course is one of our own and we will hopefully hear from him soon as he's been pretty busy lately.

Chip used to live in oak view, up here by Ojai.
I used to see him regularly years ago, but haven't seen him around for awhile.

I decided that insetd of trying to guess who might be known by whom, or trying to remember guys who's names escape me, I might as well just throw up more pics.

Among the people shown are Jay and Julie Riffe, Brandi Easter, Daryl Wong, Bill Kitto and Ray Klestad, and Robin Csrdin. Robin is the huge guy who owns the mansion where the party was held.

In the first pic, the red headed guy with his arm around an African American woman (his wife) is Rich Tedesco. He was one of my best dive buddies, but he died during our trip to La Paz in in August of 1998.

Edit- oh well- sometimes it lets me add photos, and other times it doesn't, and I don't know what the difference is. I'll try again later.

Thanks Bill those are really cool to look at, I only know a handful of the faces. That must have been a huge mansion, does Robin have a best friend? If he doesn't I'd like to apply ;).

Me and Dam have always kicked around the idea of having a big spearo get together, pot luck, whatever. Maybe show some footage and just bs, hopefully we'll get something together for this year.

Robin is a Neptune, or at least he was.

As I recall he invented a composite used as armor on Apache helicopters and other stuff and then later got a contract with General Motors.

It broke Nancy's heart that he had a barn bigger than our house but no horses.

I think he was an All-American water polo player at USC.

I see lots of smiling faces and a happy bunch.
Can you imagine what a "Spearboard" party would look like today? I imagine a bunch of drunk 17 year olds picking fights with the heros of our sport and running around in pink speedos.

Wow, I remember diving with Mark Barville when I was just out of High School!!! Whatever happened to him? I heard he moved to Hawaii or something?
I'm glad I didn't go to that party, cuz I'd have to look at some picture of me and get depressed. Thanks for posting those Bill!

Jim,

He got married to a doctor who works for Kaiser, moved to Kona, and has a couple of kids (I think).

Weren't you along on a trip on my Skipjack with Mark where we ended up out in open water off the west end of Clemente, chasing yellowtail?

Cool blast from the past Bill.

I was at this party when I was just starting to catch WSB and looking up to all of these legends that showed up. Mark Barville made some of the best scallops I've ever had that night. A couple of buddies and I drove down in an RV to take in some diving the next day. I remember Mark had posted a hint on FDL about "surfing seabass" and I asked him if he was referring to a specific surf spot that I knew about. He smiled and nodded. The next day, we dove that spot and I got my first seabass in the 30lb range.

Thanks for posting the pics.

He also had that gnarly Hawaiian GWS encounter a couple years ago. I guess people had a hard time believing it, but it happened so close to shore that a bunch of people saw it go down from the rocks and literally got sick cause they thought he was getting eaten in front of their eyes.

In the center of Brandi and Julie we have the stunning Mehgan Heaney Grier from Florida. She was a skin diver/model who Co-stared in the TV series Extreme Contact with Manny Pugg and Mark Rackley the camera man. I had met them when I was working a DEMA dive show for Riffe a few years before. Manny and and Mehgan showed us some of dive footage at their room and Jay and I gave them some ideas pointed toward a program with conservation and adventure. I really love those guys tons of high adventure.

Crazy I was 2 when this happened...I don't even really know you guys and it brings a smile to my face seeing all of the smiles in those pics. Humbling to hear that in spite of all the changes in the last 17 years some you guys have made it through still passionate as ever about the sport.

Sorry to hear that you lost friend Rich, that's a bummer.
